To be fair the nice thing about building government services is that you get to see people build very similar things with widely different technical stacks and approaches. React could benefit from layered rendering rather than the typical client first approaches I see.

I really like React, it's fun to develop with and in many ways expresses UI for me in ways that other frameworks never have. But I couldn't be honest and say that of the many audits I have done for services in GOV that the output is good for users.

React is not a library, it's a community, an ecosystem with a community that thinks about building in a certain way.

You don’t understand the React community at all then. It’s a huge tent with wildly different opinions. The output of Next.js and Gatsby seem hard to criticize.

I have criticized them both in the past, for accessiblity and performance reasons If you compare the output of Gatsby to a Jekyll site, there's opportunity there. If we build static sites from a client first tech stack were missing a trick.

Case example: Gatsby's router created barriers for users. I think a more interesting solution would be to explore the underlying needs for a static site. Maybe we could use a service worker instead, and avoid client routing entirely.

I made the router, and yes, Gatsby should move focus to the body on route changes, which it does in v2.

I've not checked in with them in a while but they had similar issues with routing last time I checked.

So route changes not moving focus (an easily fixed bug), is that all?

I did an audit for them and found that when JavaScript was turned off their site performed much better with the same experience.

I’ve considered turning it off for everything but the ticket purchase page on my site.
