So I said I'm going to start discussing how "modern" frontend practice impacts experiences using public sector sites. Lets get into it. You know who deserves the very best experience? Hey Alex, thanks for this thread. I'd love to compare notes sometime on potential ways to improve. I'm not supposed to be back in the Bay for a couple months at least, but do you ever make it to DC? It would be great if you wanted to stop by and talk with some folks here in DC.

Hey Matt, sorry to have missed you at XOXO. Just to be *super* clear: my goal isn't to call out public sector folks. I know how hard and thankless that work is. Rather, I'm trying to show how broken modern frontend culture is overall using the examples I *can* talk about.

Happy to meet with anyone working on these sites. Also want to reiterate that USDS and GDS are setting some really great examples too: https://www.webpagetest.org/result/180912_SS_83216a864d99f6bea4cc7f5f0dd5b233/ …

👋 I run http://federalist.18f.gov , a service that which hosts 100+ static .gov sites (including http://designsystem.digital.gov ) and would be interested in getting ideas from you of quick win practices we can embed in our templates, which need more love than my resources permit.

Would be happy to welcome you (or other folks from the public) to DC or set up a zoom meeting for folks to join remotely, whatever is easiest - LMK (DMs open for contact info). You can also join our Slack at http://chat.18f.gov .

Hey Will, I always start from the results and work backwards to the causes. Try to do that guided by data and goals. Without knowing more about 18F's intended users, I try to set a budget based on global trends: https://infrequently.org/2017/10/can-you-afford-it-real-world-web-performance-budgets/ …

This looks to be blocked on fonts, which are in competition for bandwidth against quite a number of large images (which are not above the fold): https://www.webpagetest.org/video/compare.php?tests=180912_DN_2529ed5e5e176fda64a2f1d1ae5f436a-r:1-c:0 …
