I should say that what data I have access to also has all sorts of caveats and biases. The true thing, however, is that even a "high-end" Android is a relative POS compared to the same-generation iPhone.

And that difference has trickled down through the ecosystem for the last decade.

To explore this difference, lets go Android shopping! I'll spot us a virtual budget of $300 USD and we all have to find what we think is a good deal at that price-point for a new, unlocked device. Go!

Here's a Moto G6 for $300: https://www.amazon.com/Moto-G6-Unlocked-T-Mobile-Exclusive/dp/B07C38BKCD/ref=sr_1_6?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1536712568&sr=1-6&refinements=p_36%3A14674876011 … Some pretty interesting specs: https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_g6-9000.php …

The comparison is pretty brutal: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/compare/9786484?baseline=9789964 …

Just the memory bandwidth and cache comparisons are devastating. If the G6 were $50 cheaper it still wouldn't be a good deal.

The Essential phone has been heavily marked down ($300!!!): https://www.amazon.com/Essential-Phone-Halo-Edge-Edge/dp/B078SQ7GWK/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1536712568&sr=1-1&refinements=p_36%3A14674876011 … How does it stack up? The Essential Phone was released more than a year after the SE, and cost $700 this time last year. $300 is a fire-sale price.

So if the median is $300 and not $100, and most of that volume is Android (it is), the that device is somewhere between soon-to-be-unsupported and total-performance-disaster.

Replying to @slightlylate @kragen
Thanks for the shopping trip. Is the primary problem the lack of CPU cache? Any idea why they don't put that into a $300 phone?

CPU cache is emblematic of the overall lack of focus on CPU perf in Android-land, ya.
