I feel like Argentina is a reasonably-median-income country, as countries go (#53–57 out of 184–193 in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)_per_capita …) but the cellphones I see people using all the time on the subway and buses are humongous, I don't think they cost only US$100

I guess our nominal GDP per capita is actually almost 3× the GDP of the actually median countries on the list like Iran, Namibia, or Fiji, though, so I guess you're probably right and I'm probably wrong

Haha, I'm actually just repeating what
@slightlylate tells me. I don't actually know where the raw data about the "median device" actually comes from.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

Well, in that case *he's* probably right and I'm probably wrong. Although I guess our nominal GDP is probably going to be a lot lower next time stats come out

but probably not ⅔ lower

I should say that what data I have access to also has all sorts of caveats and biases. The true thing, however, is that even a "high-end" Android is a relative POS compared to the same-generation iPhone.

And that difference has trickled down through the ecosystem for the last decade.

To explore this difference, lets go Android shopping! I'll spot us a virtual budget of $300 USD and we all have to find what we think is a good deal at that price-point for a new, unlocked device. Go!

The comparison is pretty brutal: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/compare/9786484?baseline=9789964 …

Just the memory bandwidth and cache comparisons are devastating. If the G6 were $50 cheaper it still wouldn't be a good deal.
