How are you handling configuration state in Service Worker? We have to deploy a new SW on every app deploy just to change config data, because IndexedDB is too slow and unreliable to be used when making cache decisions.

E.g. we're seeing IndexedDB access times of >1s (or timeouts altogether) frequently in production. Kinda defeats the performance benefits of SW caching if we have to wait a second for IndexedDB to tell us what version of the app to load.

Ick. Not very surprised. Did you file issues? Cause, while I hope you find a solution, that should be fixed. Storing a JSON blob in cache should do the trick to avoid IDB for simple config.

Filed https://github.com/w3c/ServiceWorker/issues/1331 … (cc @jaffathecake) but wondering if there's something obvious we're missing. We tried the JSON-in-cache hack but noticed a surprisingly high eviction rate (detected via an IndexedDB fallback).

It seems like others aren't running into this issue, but I'm starting to suspect a high number of SW users are not doing a thorough job of collecting RUM/error data from Service Workers and just aren't aware of the IDB performance issues…

Thanks for the pointer. I meant issues with respect to IDB perf. While 1s at 99%ile might just be what it is, seems like it is worth poking. We should check with out friends from Search on metrics. Do you see a high eviction rate in cases where the actual content survives?

Ah sorry. I assumed the problem with IDB is already well-known based on @slightlylate's comments in the linked GitHub thread.

If you're talking about small bits of static data that can be personalized per user, but don't need to change over the lifetime of the service worker's registration, URL query params can help. E.g.https://stackoverflow.com/a/44444379/385997 …
