This, of course, is *before* the inevitable (ponderous) JS bundle is requested. Can't get those massive scripts down the wire when it's congested with this dreck.

"Modern" frontend development as practices in the React/Redux/JS-all-the-things style is a disaster. Everything designed to fix your last mistake instead makes it worse.

What formalisms have you seen for what I’d call “subgraph transfer”?
@GraphQL and caching via the@apollographql client seem like the right idea. And SSR for large DOM that could be tiny client JS seems like the wrong one. -
The last one is a complex and nuanced, which is why I think we collectively aren't navigating it well. Also, most people don't seem to encounter the tradeoff as "html vs. tiny client JS".

Hi, Do you know much of this is the DOM-serialized Redux state? In my production apps, it easily takes up to ~100kb alone.

It's often more than half.

Wild. I'd like to point out that many apps wouldn't do SSR at all if it was significantly more complicated than what Redux offered. And that if you don't care about performance and do basic profiling, you can run any tool into the ground. But it's fair criticism of the model.
-
Teams aren't getting warnings from their tools that these outcome are bad. These apps are -- to your eyes and mine -- prototypes that escaped the lab. And nobody is telling them they aren't production-quality.

Wait does Redux bloat one's html with SSR somehow? I've never heard that, but I've also never SSR'd before. cc

No,
@slightlylate means that if you serialize an object with a lot of stuff in it, you'll get a serialized object with a lot of stuff in it. - 10 more replies
