Every time I see this wikipedia page it once-again blows my mind that Apple is shipping chips in *phones* with 8MB of *L2* cache: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple-designed_processors …

To put that in perspective, here's the fastest shipping chip in the Android ecosystem that I'm aware of today:https://en.wikichip.org/wiki/samsung/exynos/9810 …

It has 2MB of L2 cache and 4MB of L3. Here's a quick refresher on what that means:https://stackoverflow.com/questions/4087280/approximate-cost-to-access-various-caches-and-main-memory …

Apple is just dominating here. They're 1+ year ahead, no matter how you look at it.

There's more cache per-core in an Apple part than most Android SoCs put in the entire package.

I still really want to know the cause; are the Samsungs and HTCs of this world not asking their suppliers for SoCs with more cache? Are their suppliers unwilling to make such a part? Can they not agree a price with their suppliers?

I suspect it's all of the above. Their marketing departments are in "I don't need to outrun the bear, I just need to outrun the other person" mode; their "competition" is other Android vendors.

Specifically, it's quite difficult to run real comparisons that show the differences due to Apple's locked-down hardware. If you could boot Android on an A11, I suspect the situation would change quickly.

Also, tech journalists are asleep at the wheel. This is a scandal and they aren't reporting it that way.

I wonder how much of this is down to the fact that for many the flowchart of "what phone should I buy" starts with the choice "Android or iOS?". Like, I think for many (most?) consumers it really is a case that they are totally separate, and comparisons across are irrelevant.
