Something else I would add is to ask people to seriously think about why they want to get involved in this sort of work. It may sound glamours, but it really isn’t and it probably isn’t even the easiest way to make an impact.

1000 times this. Nothing about this work is "fun" in a generally accepted sense, and most "wins" come with more than their fair share of frustration and regret.

Back at Microsoft I used to joke about using “Do you want to work on standards?” as an interview questions. The punchline was: If the candidate answers yes, it's a no-hire.

I think we do better in Chrome, but have worked actively against building positions for "standards people". It's isolating; defines the role away from the (correct, useful) task of feature design. Also try to support those engaged in standards so fewer people have a Bad Time.
