Tools I recommend automate those aspects. Having a thin-enough framework is crucial, but pointless without app/project structure & support.

I don't know, but, would you not also consider ionic "big"...{ Slow?} ... as well in this case as it is based off angular?

Ionic 4 / Stencil, which is the base for this, is based upon standard Web Components, not Angular. Although Angular is also working hard on getting the bundle size way down (Project Ivy), allow building Web Components (Angular Elements) and more.
