I get why it would be *possible* to do so in SF. But what's the actual positive reason for it? And are you okay with the inevitable knock-on effects of pushing out all the surrounding local cafes in favor of cafeteria-style places capable of feeding thousands during lunch rush?

/me refers to the abject horror of getting lunch in Tokyo. This will be fine.

If this happened in Redmond, it would be a lot harder for me to be carless. Tech insisting on weird little exurban enclaves comes with some obligation to make that a sustainable place to spend the day.

(Mostly agree that it sounds good in the downtown area, although I'd want to know more about how it impacts affordable options for non-tech workers in the area.)

IDK, I worry that it will distort the economics of the restaurants even more. The financial district is full of offices without cafeterias and, as a result, lots of restaurants that all close at 8pm and it turns into a ghost town.

I'm not sure I support this specific mechanism (seems like lots of potentially unintended consequences), but I definitely think that the in-building cafes are a terrible pattern. At Google SF I was always rallying people to get out for lunch. At Attic, we subsidized eating out.

Think I can agree w the motivation to avoid ironic Seattle-like outcomes but I can do without the paternalistic bs about 'techies getting outside'.

How many offices even exist within, say, a 15 minute walk of Castro? AFAICT, it goes straight from retail to residential.
