Got to slide in here to agree with Alex and point out that glorifying rich people bestowing alms on the poor and “modestly” telling everyone about it is a concept directly out of the Middle Ages.

That said, this made both people happy, so the act is laudable, but I wonder if the CEO would enjoy being taxed more for the benefit of public transit?

While this is reasonable for an office job in an urban area, it is pretty standard to have "must have a reliable vehicle" as a prerequisite for many jobs, and as a presumption in many areas. And it's also pretty standard to have to call in now & then with "sorry, my car died".

I almost brought that up, but I'll admit that our mass transit sucks relative to many places. Do I expect a subway in remote towns, no - but I'm for the spirit of which Alex is advocating.
