For context, the latest Firefox is 61. 48 is even older than the (ancient) ESR (52):

Someone on the team told me about the investment *after* I posted all of this. Really hoping for improvements (one way or the other), and hopeful about implementation diversity.
Also, did @mozilla invest? If not, why not?

I don't know, but presumably because they know that having ripped all the B2G code out of mozilla-central the current software stack is a dead end. Which is tragic, in my opinion.
