For context, the latest Firefox is 61. 48 is even older than the (ancient) ESR (52): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox_version_history … @KaiOStech is a problem in the making.https://twitter.com/voxpelli/status/1018831958170918912 …

For those wanting more data on Nokia 8110, @KaiOStech and web development – I just received mine and is testing it out right now. Here's the result from one of the tests: http://html5test.com/s/046d303ebabfa735.html … According to it's user-agent it runs Firefox 48 on KaiOS 2.5

I think 48 was the last internal build version. Certainly anything after that had it's APIs ripped from Firefox.

Basically the fix would be to re-port those APIs into a newer version of Gecko. These are non standard and won't be able to be patched onto even the ESR (52 let alone 60).

The fix would be to move to a PWA-oriented architecture as eg. Chrome OS has, rather than keeping the old Firefox OS API:s alive. I hope that is something that @KaiOStech is planning to do.

Sure some of the architecture is outdated in that sense. I meant more the APIs which are required to make a phone work... SMS and calling are part of Firefox OS phones. I'm pretty sure Chrome OS has similar non standard gubbins too.

Firefox basically sat on top of the lowest Android runtime (no Java), everything else was contained inside the browser. Either it needs low level APIs and communication to/from web content added for the APIs or to patch the browser to add this stuff.

Right, and that's all history at this point. I'm asking about the plan for the future. This can ask be improved; will it?

I was just stating the obvious shortest path to getting an updated phone. It's likely possible with a big team. Also 'AppId' got ripped out too which is a fundamental to how application security worked. It would need porting to using containers or something similar.

My hunch is it would be easier to start again at this point tbh.
