Polyfills aren't loaded based on the targeted browsers? If not, that's something they should probably add.
The "it's so easy!" view is falsified by near-total global failure. It's not working. JS is not working.

Can you elaborate a little more on "total global failure" and "JS is not working"? Is it JS, or is it the DOM?

If it is common/near total global failure, perhaps the platform should step in to to somehow make it easier?

I use conditional comments for IE9 and document.write, that never ever runs on modern browsers, after basic feature detection as in: if (!this.Promise) document.write(...); that works down to Android 4 (even 2 to be honest, depends on the poly) and I often patch down to IE8

It being easy is not falsified by many devs just not caring / bothering to. Sniff missing API’s, load needed polyfills. I don’t know what else to say. That code above‘s been in production for years.
