I don't agree with this. "optional" is the most useful value of font-display. Avoids the blocking and the switch.

Yeah, with web fonts you have to pick a bad thing, the trick is picking the best bad thing for that particular text. This is why I don't agree with MS's position here.

My point here, is sitting through the numerous meetings regarding this property the primary pain point was webkit blocking with no way of showing the content. Your the first person that has asked for optional honestly. No *user* feedback has been filed regarding this...

I'm not disagreeing that it gives you greater control, I'm saying that we have higher pri work. If we had webkits default behavior and everyone else had font-display that would be different. At any rate, I've added your feedback to the deliverable.

It's totally possible I'm the only person that wants this, but for sites that insist on a web font for body text, "optional" seems like the only sensible choice.

Fallback is only 100ms less sensible, surely?

That includes a 3s swap. For body text no-swap is better than a swap IMO. I'm sure brand folks may disagree.

Not just brand folks. Aldo anyone who doesn’t want to spend their entire life reading Droid Sans or Helvetica

I'd rather not spend my life waiting on the alternatives.
