If you could only see the traces I've seen, you'd want to burn down "modern frontend development" too.

There’s still no clear path to making production web apps that google evangelists approve of :(

I bet if DevRel threw all of its energy into fixing the stuff people are already using instead of pushing them to alternatives, they could make a fuckton of progress on these problems

Yes this is a great point. I think “abandon all your favorite tools” is too big of an ask but devrel folks don’t seem interested in crossing the aisle

It's not even mutually exclusive - like, you can *both* make React+Webpack better, while also encouraging Polymer

Yeah, totally not exclusive. I was just saying that there _is_ a path (which was directly addressing
@jkup's point).1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
And contra
@jkup's baseless point about "not wanting to cross the aisle", folks like@addyosmani have poured a huge fraction of their time in the past few years into documenting how to do better with some of the slower, more popular tools.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

So one can claim there isn't a path (there is), but that can't be reconciled with the notion that any path requires change on the part of front-end engineers. If what we are collectively doing was fine, we wouldn't be having this discussion. The status quo is not OK.

Sorry I more meant you. Lots of folks doing great work helping us make our apps faster. Trying to give feedback that I often read your tweets, feel like you think the tools I work on are bad but don't have much insight into why or what we could do better (without abandoning them)

Twitter is failing me. Just to be clear I'm not saying you don't have insight (I think you have a ton!) I'm trying to say I don't walk away with insight as to what to do better..

I see. Thanks. Well, I'd start with budgeting: https://infrequently.org/2017/10/can-you-afford-it-real-world-web-performance-budgets/ …

Budgeting helps you evaluate engineering choices in a frame that gives you a way to push back on the constant demand for features. It helps give you a way to talk about overall user experience.
