the other day i read a tweet about how adobe acrobat is bulky because it has to include backwards compatibility for every kind of pdf since the dawn of time

the year is 2050. running adobe reader takes up 50% CPU of the most powerful machines available to consumers. the carbon emissions from reading PDFs now exceed motor vehicles. it's still impossible to copy/paste text from a pdf

An Adobe engineer once told me that there were no fewer than 3 scripting engines in the product (this was circa '06) thanks to PDF Forms (section 12.7), Flash, and SVG integration.
