3) Many statistics cited, if indeed inaccurate, are not inaccurate to a meaningful degree. 4) The argument of hours wasted by people who slept 8 hours when they only needed 7 is ridiculous. If you can sleep 8, you're making use of it.

5) People with insomnia do get anxious when they read how insufficient sleep, but there's already a deluge of messaging about this in the popular press. And some people with insufficient sleep opportunity could use a kick in the butt to get more sleep.

6) Why we sleep is actually a pretty good and accessible compendium on the benefits of sleep and risks of inadequate sleep. It's much more up to date than any other popular press book I'm aware of.

Valid points on several accounts, but as scientists we need to clarify research with facts...not sensationalism. Probably not as compelling of a read though.

I agree. But it does need to be considered in context. And many of the criticisms levied are correct only in the technical sense. Only a handful are worth talking about.

@Sleep_Strong note. I think the blogger (despite some inaccuracies himself) brings up the important issue that pop science communication can and should be more nuanced -
Biggest issue w/blog post for me was the quick dismissal of epi evidence & the idea that we need to do experimental studies of sleep + cancer...
