I don't think they tried to hide the fact. People just disagree about what effect sizes we should get excited. https://twitter.com/Neuro_Skeptic/status/967462728204980224 … I actually tend towards "pub and other bias" made us expect bigger effects than we should, and this is at least realistic

& of course these small average effects are averaging over people who see large effects and no effects and negative effects, although of course no one knows how to do better than trial and error regarding leveraging that heterogeneity.

Nobody disagrees they're statistically significant. I thought somewhat reasonable given effect size to say clinically questionable benefit in some cases, but see http://slatestarcodex.com/2014/07/07/ssris-much-more-than-you-wanted-to-know/ … for more.
