I have a place where I say complicated things about philosophy and science. That place is my blog. This is where I make terrible puns.

Redo: Please answer only if you live in the Bay Area and work in tech: had you ever heard about "raw water" before the NYT ran an article on it?

I had not and I’m surrounded by the kinds of people who would have been into it. Silicon Valley is the new Wall Street so it’s fun to come up with sensational narratives.

Mass media needs powerful enemies to take down - that’s its (legitimate) purpose. Tech industry is lucky that Trump came along, otherwise we’d be target #1 right now.

I'm convinced that some NYT reporter found maybe 2 people in the bay area doing this and decided "Loathed and lionized group doing clearly stupid thing that East Coasters can laugh at" would sure make for a great story.

The impression I got from the news reports I've been exposed to was not "Look at what these Silicon Valley idiots are doing" but rather "Look at what these specific and particular idiots are doing".

After reading about it, I even stopped by Rainbow Grocery out of morbid curiosity, but couldn’t find it on the shelves

I mean, I was already there for some bulk organic coffee and amaranth flour, so the opportunity to investigate presented itself nicely 😛

I work down the street from Rainbow Grocery but the first time I heard about it was from this article last year:https://gizmodo.com/juicero-founder-hops-on-silicon-valleys-hot-starvation-1818583147 …

Socking turn of events as people realize that the media routinely depicts fringe trends as mainstream (and vice-versa) in order to confirm their own beliefs and narratives.

Googled it. So developing countries struggle to provide clean water and SF is paying 16 bucks a bottle for dirty water. Wow.
