It makes me sad that @bryan_caplan doesn't understand the point @slatestarcodex makes here: http://slatestarcodex.com/2015/10/07/contra-caplan-on-mental-illness/ …

@slatestarcodex political (mis)use: in the Soviet Union they had a diagnosis of "sluggish" schizophrenia aka being an antisocial dissident. -
@aClassicLiberal Yes, and notice you're having to go to a literal Stalinist regime before you can find a good example. -
@slatestarcodex not so long ago we used to but "anti-social" youth and others in institutions, but agree has to be authoritarian society. -
@aClassicLiberal "Antisocial" has specific meaning in psychiatry similar to how laypeople use "psychopath". -
@slatestarcodex that's why I put it in quotation marks aka norm breaking and/or morally incorrect behavior. :)

@slatestarcodex wasn't that Caplans point? That to a certain degree diagnoses reflect politics, sociological preferences of govt elites? -
@aClassicLiberal Not 0% politics, but little attempt to enforce elite preferences on others. Noone gets sectioned for masochism w/o problem

@slatestarcodex I get the 'feeling upset'/'being ok' thing, but to what extent is this externally influenced?@aClassicLiberal -
@slatestarcodex What I mean is: you could be OK with bipolar, or upset with being homosexual because of what you read/hear@aClassicLiberal
