Here's comet 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann (center) on Feb 2. 29P just had a 4-mag outburst a few hours earlier, its largest since 2015. And of course, whenever you are taking an image a satellite will pass over your target so you have to take another one...

Comet 29P seems to have experienced a medium outburst. Unfortunately, the moon is interfering:

    今朝(2日朝)のC/2020 A2 岩本彗星のスケッチです。 微光ながら、意外とあっさり見えてしまいました。付近の微星と比べると少なくとも11等はありそうです。 20cm62倍で、1.84UTにm1=10.9, DC=3-4, dia=2.0'と目測。 11等の新彗星。 - C/2020 A2 (Iwamoto) 岩本彗星

I’m confused. Last week we finished the 2nd season of ST:Discovery. Today we watched the first two parts of ST:Picard. Now we try to finish ST:Enterprise which we abandoned a few years ago. And I still long to re-watch ST:DS9....

C/2020 A2 (Iwamoto) might be as bright as 11 mag. estimated the comet at 10.9 mag and well condensed with DC 4/. I still hope for clear morning skies before the moon interferes.

This starfield spans some four full moons across the heroic northern constellation of Perseus. In telescopic exposures made on January 24, 26, and 28 by Rolando Ligustri, it holds the open star clusters h and Chi Persei with comet PanSTARRS (C/2017 T2)

Was lucky tonight and skies cleared again. C/2017 T2 (PANSTARRS) still nicely placed near the double cluster h & chi Per. Also C/2018 T2 (ASASSN) is still visible for me at 12.4 mag.

Managed to estimate C/2017 T2 within a 45-min spell of clear sky within stormy gusts. 9.5 mag, DC 4, 3‘ coma. 25.4L64

I wonder what advances will then be present for the visual observer. 11/11

All this is quick and straightforward and even if I would've had a big scope back in 1987 I would have struggled to find a faint comet and to make a decent magnitude estimate. If I'm lucky I will have 20+ years of observing ahead. 10/11

Currently I am still star-hopping to the comet but I will receive my new digital setting circles in two weeks or so and then I will be able to point the telescope via a smartphone app to the comet. 9/11

My usual routine is now to keep my comet orbits database for my star charting software up-to-date (very important for fainter comets!), select the comets for the night, print out comparison and finder charts and go out. 8/11

I dare to say that only with the advances in computer and information technology the regular and quick observation of faint comets for amateurs was made possible. 7/11

So, after upgrading to a 25-cm Dobson I needed to upgrade my tools, too. Star charting software, a connection to an astronomical bulletin board system via modem (remember the connection noises?) and digital setting circles on my Dob for fast finding of the comets. 6/11

It might have been not a big problem to pencil mark the position of a bright comet in a star atlas but when it comes to faint comets you'll need an atlas down to a few magnitudes fainter than what your scope reaches and comparison stars that faint as well. 5/11

Later I received a copy of the AAVSO atlas which got down to 9th (?) magnitude and contained comparison star mags - what a quantum leap! But what was really hard, compared to today was the lack of a software which plots the comet's position. 4/11

No wonder that I was only able to observe brighter comets - of my first one C/1987 P1 (Bradfield) I received word from the daily newspaper... 3/11
