So saddened by for at large and all involved. When dust clears, I hope correcting scientific record will not just involve retractions but also re-testing with fresh studies. If funding was merited then, it should be merited now!

Formerly know as the yeast etc evolution and ecology meeting! Very happy that EMBL has given us the support to put this on again since it’s one of my favorite meetings!

Thread re Let me begin by saying I’m neither an epidemiologist nor a public-health expert. Here are a few people I’m following who have way more expertise than me in these areas: [1/n]

This piece is a great read and describes a common feeling to many scientists and one that haunts me. Finding the right level of abstraction to try to understand is so difficult. An Existential Crisis in Neuroscience - Issue 81: Maps - Nautilus

My main advice for giving a good chalk talk is to give a good main research seminar. In my experience, it sets the tone for the chalk talk. Def give a little recap to start chalk talk. Go on the strength of what you did, not some half-baked BS that you probably won't do anyway.

I’m for 12-year term limits for members of Congress and I know how to get it passed - exempt current lawmakers. They would pass it immediately and we would have a more aligned and dynamic legislature in no time.

Elsevier: Please reconsider your position against and more generally about your outdated model of publishing.

Editors: I am not in a position to give advice to you. I only ask to think about the moral aspect of your job.

Reviewers: I hope this thread convinces you that it is morally justifiable to reject all review requests from Elsevier-owned journals. But it is also morally justifiable to accept.

    (i) It will be harder to find reviewers. (ii) Your paper will likely be inaccessible to your colleagues at and many others. (iii) You are making greedy, filthy rich, people even filthy richer, on taxpayer money. Is it worth it?

This train of thought leads me to the only possible moral position for myself and anybody who had the patience to read to this point. Authors: Is it really necessary to submit your paper to an Elsevier journal? Have you considered the consequences?

The hope is that such small costs will accumulate and translate into real monetary costs for Elsevier because authors will stop submitting their best papers to Elsevier journals, best editors will quit, readership and revenues will drop.

However, anybody who chooses to cooperate with Elsevier must be aware of the moral burden of such choice. My refusal to review is the physical instantiation of this moral burden.

It is painful but I have to say yes, unfortunately, I think they do. Cooperating with Elsevier is fundamentally wrong at this point in time. Of course, there may be individual circumstances which justify a choice to do so. I am not judging anybody.

This is a very real, painful question for me because I personally know people who work for/with Elsevier, so I am inflicting this cost (however small) onto my dear friends and colleagues. What is my moral authority to do that? Do they deserve it?

Nevertheless, my refusal to review causes a delay in the process, which is a cost, however small, to editors and authors. But why am I inflicting a cost on them? They are not Elsevier.

To resolve this dilemma, I ask: What are the consequences of my refusal to review? I’d like to think of myself as a good reviewer, but there are (thankfully) many good reviewers out there. So, the paper will be reviewed and hopefully improved and published.
