If you really want to learn about accessibility, check out Whitney Quesenbery's workshop/class (10 hours, over 3 days). She's the best. I'd be taking it myself if I didn't have a prior commitment.

Finally! Caroline Jarrett ()’s wonderful book on doing surveys is out. I like it so much that I even wrote the foreword (and I hate writing anything). If you’ve ever wanted to do a survey—or you want to do better surveys—buy it now!

UK folks in user research: I got asked an excellent question by “Why is it such a rarity to find Junior User Researcher roles? It is difficult for junior and aspiring user researchers to get started.” Any help? Pointers? Ideas?

Wow! Thanks, everybody. As some of you know, I find writing *very* hard, and comments like these really encourage me to try to do more.

They refused his gesture, and the next day he walked out into the -40 °F blizzard. His companions died 13 days later, still 11 miles from their base camp and safety. He did have a way with words. 3/3

(Not sure what the note said. Presumably something like “Towels and sheets are clean. Left some food for you in the fridge.😊”) On their way back, suffering from gangrene and frostbite, Oates asked the other four to leave him behind so they could survive. 2/3

I think this is my all-time favorite quote. Oates was one of the five members of the 1911 Scott expedition who reached the South Pole. When they arrived, they found a note from the Amundsen expedition who had gotten there 35 days earlier. 1/3

Oh, you'd like to hear the whole podcast? Try Sorry. Figured the graphic in the quoted tweet would take you there. Beginner mistake. 🙄

Another very enjoyable (for me, anyway) podcast, this one with Eran Dror. Topics include my lifelong belief that "it's better to be nice than to be smart," and my politics (which I've never discussed online). Oh, and lots about .

What's more fun than chatting with ? E.g. “I was the one kid in Catholic school who never wanted to be a priest” and “Writing is like the torture machine in The Princess Bride that sucks a year out of your life every few seconds.”

Lovely chat with NZ UXer Brendan Jarvis, and as usual said things I shouldn’t have, like my answer (at 1:07) to “What do you see as the greatest usability challenge we are facing as a society?” , or wherever you listen to podcasts (The Space InBetween).

One of the many good things about 2021 is that my friend Caroline Jarrett's LONG-awaited book on doing surveys is going to appear before too long. But you don't need to wait at all to learn a lot from her: Head for this free webinar!

I'm teaching a "masterclass" on usability testing at the UXLX conference on Feb. 10-12. Lots of great experts like Kim Goodwin, Peter Morville, Kate Rutter, Jeff Gothelf, etc. etc. Only downside is since it's online you don't get to actually go to Lisbon.
