In my country the question is: How do we make students read? Actually, not Students, citizens in general, we are not a country of readers. I remember a government authority stating that in average, Mexicans read two o three books a year.

Better yet, increase authentic text (not textbooks) in content areas. Ss MUST read and write across content areas starting in K if we ever want them to be proficient across these areas.

By teaching literacy through the content areas (Science, History, Math, etc.), we have the opportunity to spark curiosity and build skills for both. Our goal is to create students who can and want to read to learn. We must guide them in learning how and why to research.

My love of history was born from Bronte's Jane Eyre, Michener's Centennial, Dickens' Oliver Twist, James Clavell's Shogun, Hawthorne's The Scarlett Letter, Haley's Roots, and the countless folk tales and Greek myths. Reading is a form of time travel.
