Whenever the topic of Google comes up The Times becomes unhinged. If Google is “cynically lobbying”, then what are the big record labels doing.

Why nothing that makes an enormous amount of money can have a relaxed, creative culture: Anything high-value will draw in unsavory characters, so the culture has to get good at defending against them. Which means formal processes, rules etc

This is probably the only tech meets politics book I've seen worth reading so far. Unlike others, comes up with possibly workable solutions that you wouldn't have thought of, even if you have been following the discussion. Last section especially.

But it’s weird how “mass prosperity” was such a novel and surprising thing. This is why I like Babylon Berlin, amongst other things it really depicts how bad the early 20th century (and before) was in terms of people being impoverished

It’s so bizarre to read writings from the mid-20th century about this new phenomenon of “””mass prosperity”””. That’s what happened when the last tech revolution really started to roll out (cars, supply chains, mass production) - real incomes tripled in 30 years.

You know I was destined for finance twitter because I asked them "how is that possible, wouldn't everyone just buy it then?" But nobody gave me a response (or, ngl, had a response) because I was 11

Just thinking about how I remember the housing bubble as a kid. I remember some family friend trying to convince my parents to buy a house on credit and rent it out because "housing is the perfect investment, it always goes up!"

    31. The income levels at lower deciles have a kind of high-beta correlation with GDP Growth Rate, compared with income levels at higher deciles. At sustained high GDP Growth Rates income levels at lower deciles rise faster than those at higher deciles, and vice versa.

I honestly don’t understand why people are outraged by this. I thought encouraging more people to explore tech industry was a good thing! Especially given how low the bar is for entry. It’s one of the very few industry that welcomes self taught social outcasts with open arms!
