Not to mention all the amazing coffees we’ve had in Indonesia. I miss the likes of Giyanti, Amstirdam, Caturra (Jakarta, Malang, Surabaya cafes everyday. My third wave sf coffee shops don’t really compare, real talk.

Southeast Asia is home. Some places more than others. It’s where I: grew up, went to school, backpacked, fell in love, started businesses, ate like a queen every single day.

The first place I ever traveled to in my life was Sarawak. Getting to know Sarawak and Sabah is one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had. Sarawak laksa, kolo mee, Tuaran mee, paku, various tribal foods. They barely travel to urban Malaysia, def not globally. A shame.

Sabah also happens to have some of the freshest seafood in the world. All in, amazing part of the world. And I miss home. Home, as in SE Asia. Coz being in any of it makes me feel at home.

I haven’t even touched on: roti John, Malabari Malaysian food, sup tulang, SG/MY Serani and Perankan food yet. The great hybrid bastardized food cuisines that have barely left our shores but really should be known for the world class food they are.

My most on-brand SE Asia moment: I spent a week in the literal jungle with an Iban community for Hari Gawai. So much drunken revelry. Lots of tuak. I got a tribal tattoo. At 4am someone steered a boat with me in it so I could fly to Barcelona to eat at.. El Bulli the next day!

I feel like I’ve compressed quite a lot of the region and I’ve been lucky to have seen that much of it. I’ve been to every ASEAN country except Timor and Brunei. I’ve lived in or commuted to quite a few of them (MY, PH, ID, MM, VN). So much joy.

What I would like right this moment: keropok lekor from Trengganu. Claypot crab rice from Siu Siu. Bún riêu in Vietnam. Lechon kawali in Cebu. Charsiu from Meng Kee. Mohinga. Assam laksa. Curry laksa. Bakmi kepiting slathered with pork lard. I am the ASEAN glutton.

A big part of my marriage is about just knowing that when we feel emotional, homesick or we need a boost: put on Siri Nurhaliza, Peter Pan, Sheila Majid or Ungu and everything is better. It’s just an emotional connection we share on galau/rock kangkang music.

Rock kangkang = music that makes you have so many feelings you have to kangkang. Like Michael Bolton, but in Malay, Indonesian or Thai. I just made that up (the definition, not the concept).
