It's really important that specialist scientists try harder to understand why nationalism is on the rise right now. Many specialists think they already understand these issues, but the truth is they do not. TBH, the world does not consider academics an expert on this.

The very act of specializing in an obscure topic in science undermines the scientist's ability to perceive + comprehend these large, complex social systems. It is a mistake to assume that specialization has somehow prepared the scientist for this sort of "systems" thinking.

The book Globalists by Quinn Slobodian explains a lot, at least to me, the recent surge in nationalism in politics. We will continue to have that trend with a neoliberal supranational politics which continue to destroy national democratic sovereignty.
