All-too-common failure mode in science. When my mother was diagnosed, I spent months reading the literature. I saw branches of the research tree (corticosteroid hypothesis, insulin resistance) closed with seemingly little justification, and all effort focused on amyloid and tau.

How do we organise our research activity to explore the ensemble of scientific ideas, instead of getting stuck in a single trajectory? Culture and incentives matter.

And yet, this 'cabal' shouldn't be a surprise. This is exactly how Thomas Kuhn described the way that normal science works. There's a paradigm that most senior scientists jealously guard and then a younger generation forces a paradigm shift. It's just normal science really.

I detect a theme here. Orthodoxy channeling all funding towards dead-ends and stifling new ideas. Where have I heard that before eh!? Thx for the post Sabine.

So disappointing for society, for the patients, and for the scientists who dare to think differently. Science needs disruption.

Dr. Sabine: I didn't have space in my last tweet to say "Many Thanks" for pointing out this story. I've added it to my ACHILES personal AI database subsection about prion diseases. This story is bad news for Trump. Cheers & Be Well Dr. Patrick R. Mullen Widowed Scientist
