"Conversion therapy is unproven, widely condemned and does not reflect the values of a modern and compassionate New Zealand." Same for homeopathy, astrology or socialism. Will religions that preach repentance from being gay to go to heaven be banned?https://www.nzherald.co.nz/politics/news/article.cfm?c_id=280&objectid=12152276&fbclid=IwAR0rEe7nL7jW76Gi-bHCx3y4pj-iE7vyc8N1cMfMTICavuqXh8a0jsXaQZk …

Nobody’s considering banning particular churches; they just need to cease conversion therapy. Just like motorcycle clubs aren’t banned but violent assaults & drug dealing are. Hopefully churches would be more influenced by legal boundaries than some bikie groups.

Who do you think devout religious people are more afraid of? Government or God?

How do you think politicians can help social and human rights progress? Try to protect people’s safety?Probably through the law!

Protecting them from aggression and fraud at the hands of others. Govt can’t, and shouldn’t, attempt to oversee every decision people make. Govt is generally terrible at running itself now. How effective has the prohibition of drugs been in keeping people safe.

The diff being that most people in "conversion therapy" are coerced by others (usually parents), rather than choosing for themselves. And, yes, I know people can be peer pressured into experimenting with drugs, but it's not the same dynamic. The bill draws a line in the sand.

If they’re being forced into it by their parents, then the therapy itself isn’t the issue: the parents are. They’ve probably arrived at that solution as a result of regular church attendance with the child. A pastor can preach conversion to hundreds of tithe payers at once

You could argue the same about female genital mutilation (parental beliefs, cultural practices). It's still illegal to perform them, and so it bloody well should be! I'm finished discussing this with you.pic.twitter.com/RLIHY4nyOE

Yeah. I do say that. Cosmetic male circumcision for babies is a horrible tradition I’m glad to see falling out of fashion.
