#OTD 1963 Linus Pauling (back row, right) was awarded the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize for his fight against nuclear weapons. (The 1962 Peace Prize was held over 1 year) The award was announced the same day the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which Pauling fought for, went into force.

#OTD in 1961, President Kennedy flew to Dallas to visit Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn at Baylor Hospital. Rayburn, the then-longest serving member of the U.S. House (48 years), would pass away the following month of pancreatic cancer.

In 1864 the Rio Grande shifted, moving the US/Mexican border south & creating a dispute over El Chamizal. In 1962 Pres. Kennedy & Pres. Mateos vowed to end the dispute which occurred on Aug. 29, 1963 with the signing of the Chamizal Convention.

The nation’s official tribute to President Kennedy, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, opened in Washington, D.C. fifty-one years ago this week on September 8, 1971. This cloth pennant was a souvenir available to those who visited the Center in the 1970s.

We are sorry to learn of the recent passing of Mikhail Gorbachev at the age of 91. In 1998, we were honored to host the former Soviet leader for a tour of The Sixth Floor Museum and Dealey Plaza. He was so moved by the experience that he recorded his thoughts in our Memory Book.

#OTD in 1963, 200,000 activists participated in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, including photographer Roland L. Freeman. Nearly 5 years later, Freeman documented the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign. Listen to his story here: emuseum.jfk.org/objects/72998
Trauma Room One at Parkland Hospital was dismantled and put into storage by the federal government in 1973. Shortly before, Parkland technician Don Pyeatt took a series of color photos, documenting the space. This photo shows some of the equipment still in the room at the time.

We are sorry to learn that Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough has died at age 89. On November 22, 2013, McCullough visited Dallas and took part in the city's commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination.

PT-109 was destroyed on #OTD in 1943 and quickly became a symbol of John F. Kennedy’s heroism and leadership. This large PT-109 cake prepared for President Kennedy in West Germany on June 25, 1963 is just one example of the tributes he received related to the ship.

Widespread belief in a conspiracy began almost immediately after the JFK assassination. This letter mailed to Jack Ruby's attorney in March 1964 suggested a conspiracy involving Ruby, Oswald, and others and even suggested the Ruby trial jury was manipulated by some type of “ray.”
