I’ve never been promoted, in 20+ years of working in software. Hadn’t fully realized it until I saw this thread & thought through all the ‘transitions’ I’ve been through. I can't speak for him, but I was going to ask this, too. Women + people of color tend to be timid about asking for raises and/or promos, and instead rely on people to just recognize and reward our work. But usually our work is taken for granted, and we get more responsibility...

while I may not be a woman or a person of colour, I would never assume to have things handed to me without asserting myself. the sad truth is that most employers will ride you to the bone without ever considering your needs, no matter how loyal you have been
