Forget for a moment about "family" photos. Apple's now damaging the ability for even an individual to manage things. http://peternixey.com/post/49928526270/dear-apple-lets-talk-about-photos …

@siracusa Good complaints. But bad solutions. "Straight up cloud" is too slow, and shouldn't be trusted to protect your data.

@jdriscoll I don't think his suggestions necessarily lead to worse performance.

@siracusa If you don't want a local cache you're going to be waiting for each photo to download. Even the iPhone is 8MP now. No FiOS here.

@jdriscoll Who said there'd be no local cache? That's not how I interpreted what he wrote. Key words: "…the canonical copy…"

@jdriscoll Caches are typically less than 100% the size of the total pool of data.

@siracusa But you're going to need cacheing. Probably a LOT of it to get anything that feels like browsing a local iPhoto library.

@jdriscoll …by letting it discard unmodified, unneeded data with abandon, secure that it's not lost forever.

@siracusa between you and @drdrang it seems like what you want from Apple is water from a stone. You're both smart enough - build your own!

@siracusa have you seen Everpix? It lets you back up unlimited photos to the cloud from Mac and iOS.

@siracusa Your old point about how Apple weirdly makes life harder for those "good" customers who own more than one of its products.

@siracusa I feel like that is a product/problem Apple would prefer to not touch, and something like @Everpix does great with.
