Today USCIS issued guidance that DHS "no longer considers children of U.S. government employees and U.S. armed forces members residing outside the United States as 'residing in the United States' for purposes of acquiring citizenship” -- https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/policymanual/updates/20190828-ResidenceForCitizenship.pdf …

YIKES! Thanks for the heads up.

Nothing is changing for private citizens having children abroad. They still have to apply for citizenship. That’s been the policy for a long time. This is a benefit for gov’t workers being taken away. I’m guessing changing the rules for private citizens will be next though.

This is what I wondered. There's a huge global dev industry as well as contractors that I think this impacts. Ugh.

I'm not 100% sure it wasn't already this way for civilians living/working abroad. AD military have always been considered 'different', since the government actually *sent* them overseas. But yeah, this is clearly their 1st step towards removing birthright citizenship.

So is this for non US citizen employees of the govt?

No, for US citizen parents working/stationed abroad when they have a child.
