this year, I’m going to post here with daily features of Black scientists, past and present. (Because history is also happening now.)
I have a working features list - if you think of anyone that should be on it, feel free to reply/DM
Stay tuned!Prikaži ovu nitHvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. PoništiPoništi -

As noted by her biographer, for Jackson “science and service went hand in hand.” She earned a Volunteer of the Year title in 1976, frequently participating in local outreach to excite young people about science. Jackson also served as a Girl Scout troop leader for over 30 years.

Ultimately, her spirit of service + her frustration with a seemingly unbreakable “glass ceiling” led her to a career transition. She then spent 8 years working for the Langley Federal Women’s Program, mentoring women/minority engineers and advocating for their career advancement.

She worked successfully as an engineer for 20 years, authoring ~10 papers in the field of aeronautical engineering and receiving numerous decorations/awards for both her research and service. However, an exclusionary culture continued to plague her experience in the workplace.

In 1951, she began work as a NASA computer. Wanting to transition from mathematician to engineer, she needed to first take evening graduate-level courses that were offered at a segregated white school. To enroll, she had to receive special permission from the City of Hampton.

Mary Jackson (1921-2005) was an engineer from Hampton, VA. You might recognize her name from the film “Hidden Figures” - she was NASA’s 1st Black female engineer. A member of the AKA Sorority, she graduated from Hampton University in 1941 with degrees in Math & Physical Sciences.pic.twitter.com/5aO5fbzp6E

Honored to be recognized along side my current/former trainees and collaborators. Already thinking up another 100 that should be on next year's list!

Her daughter, Norma Brown, went on to become both a nurse and an inventor herself. She acquired 10 patents in her lifetime, including one for an innovative anti-rape device (I’ll let you Google this for images rather than posting them here).

Brown acquired the patent for her “home security system utilizing television surveillance” system in 1969, and the system was quickly adopted by businesses. Many of the features sound familiar to us because they persist in home & business security systems today.

The system she developed featured 3 peepholes at different levels (for height), a sliding camera outside the door that was connected by wireless radio to monitors that could be placed anywhere in the house, a 2-way voice system, and an alarm button to contact police immediately.pic.twitter.com/6uGyOa0Ije

True to the adage, “necessity is the mother of invention,” the idea for a home-security system was born from feeling unprotected on her way home from work. Brown worked late hours and her neighborhood in Jamaica, Queens struggled with high crime and unreliable police.

If you’ve ever been protected by a home/business security alarm, you have Marie Van Brittan Brown (1922-1999) to thank. Brown was a nurse and an entrepreneur: she (along with her husband) invented the first home security system - and one of the first closed-circuit TV systems.pic.twitter.com/i0Ua4m4fFm

In addition to his exceptional intellect and academic drive, Dr. McNair held a fifth degree black belt in karate. He was also a talented saxophonist, and had planned to perform the first original musical piece recorded in space aboard the Challenger.pic.twitter.com/lep7Gvy6mQ

He patiently waited until the police and his mother came to assess the situation...and the librarian reluctantly sent him on his way with the borrowed books. In 2011, this same library was dedicated as the Ronald McNair Life and History Center.

A story recounted by his brother depicted a young McNair, who grew up in segregated South Carolina. Attending a library when he was 9, he tried to check out some books when a worker told him the library “wasn’t for coloreds” and threatened to call the cops if he didn’t leave.

In 1984, he became the 2nd Black person in space. 2 years later, he died in the tragic Space Shuttle Challenger explosion at the age of 35. The McNair Scholars Program was founded in his name in 1986 to encourage low-income, minority, and 1st-gen college students to pursue PhDs.
