I'm pregnant now with my first child and this terrifies me.

Do some research. Check out the hospital. Keep someone w/ you & the baby at all times. These are the steps I took to ease my mind. Congratulations & Good luck!
-
Thank you! I plan to ask my doctor if and how she will monitor blood loss during birth. I'm also going to ask her about warning signs I should be aware of so I can be prepared. I live in the 3rd worst state for maternal deaths but I think I have a good team of docs.

Find a doula, if you're able, and one not affiliated with the hospital. Just having an informed, calm, experienced advocate in the room makes a big difference and significantly reduces the risk of complications and unnecessary interventions.

I have a team of midwives working with my doctor. They seem to be a great crew.

I used to be a labor & delivery nurse. The stress was beyond me. Following "orders" or following what you knew was right. I saw a lot of shit and ended up with PTSD. It's absurd the way women are treated in hospitals. I gave birth at home.

I’m no statistician, but I know three unrelated cases where women, friends of mine, nearly bled to death after an apparently normal pregnancy and labor. Too many in one circle of friends.

Local hospital misdiagnosed my friend's post partum pre-eclampsia, she nearly died. Astounding what happens when maximizing profits from billing The Most Lucrative Tests That Patient's Insurance Will Cover is your priority, versus achieving the Best Possible Outcome for Patients

More of the same shit. Men deciding it's 'only' women, so why should they spend any additional money or pay it more than scant attention or lip service. "It childbirth - Women do this everyday. It's no big deal." We need women to take over everything. Men just suck at leadership.

American medical system is a study in misogyny.

Doesn't help that 1 in 6 hospital beds is in a facility where care & treatment decisions are made based on theology instead of best medical practices...
-
In labor and delivery, the intense focus on the welfare of the baby, not the mother, is about a) sexism and b) fear of malpractice, and is just the same among non-religious.

I get what you are saying, but that's a separate issue. The news story is about maternal mortality in labor & delivery.
-
I agree that elective and emergency pregnancy terminations are important. But let's not lose sight of the problem defined in the article, which is unacceptably poor maternal outcomes in live deliveries.
-
We've got a women's health and women's rights problem that's been hidden and discounted as being the equivalent of antivax campaigns and Goop cultists. But it turns out it's not just 'all in our heads'.
