I think it might be if you “only” hire one gender. But given that I have zero female engineers, trying to hire a few shouldn’t hurt.
Think about it this way: will you tell a woman when she asked why you hired her “because you are a woman?” That would be the truth in that case.

No. I think about it this way. We are looking for the best. Period. And while doing so are also looking to have a diverse team for a diverse perspective. This won't happen without effort.
