Check out our new paper in Lithos. We estimated how deep magma was stored underneath the Isle of Skye, in sills like the one we’re standing in front of here!

But it all started with collecting samples at sites of old volcanic activity, like here, the Háleyjabunga crater in SW Iceland.

Combined with other chemistry and some careful data analysis ( + new tools developed here), we can extract a mantle signal from these volcanic rocks.

These shifty looking melt inclusions (magma droplets trapped inside a crystal) are from Stapafell, Iceland. The small holes show where the Ion Probe drilled a hole into the inclusions to measure how much carbon they hold.

Most of the temperature range shown here is totally irrelevant for the real world, but I thought it was a great demonstration of a solution model, and the effect of temperature on solid solutions. The Jupyter Notebook is available in the community folder on .

The feldspar ternary- an animation. Black line shows how the spinode moves with T, starting way below the T where sanidine is stable, ending FAR above the melting point. Colour indicates curvature of the free energy surface. made it easy!
