Today, 11 december 2019, marks 22 years since the adoption of the Kyoto protocol in Japan in 1997. Since the COP25 conference is currently in full swing in Madrid, let's look at what's happened since then and what progress has been made! 🧵👇

The german TSOs expect gas use to increase by 35% until 2035, while electricity from RE must more than double from 118 GW to 252 GW in 2035. Electricity consumption will increase 23% to 2030 while the share of RE increases from 46% today to >73% in 2035🤔

A coal exit with coal start-ups?🤔An unusual approach to carbon neutrality in Germany as Datteln 4 is approved by German energy minister Peter Altmaier. The quote from him reads like a bad joke 😢

Lots of news about german coal today. Some say the government has reached a deal that could push coal exit to 2035. Others show a timeline for final exits in 2038, but don't include Datteln 4 which is going to be allowed to start operations?

German coal exit seems to move ahead as RWE close 2.8 GW of lignite by end of 2022. A bidding mechanism for hard coal until 2026 will close ~4 GW hard coal in 2020? So ~16 GW firm capacity will close by 2022. A lack of 5.5 GW in 2021 and a growing capacity deficit after that?

Germany’s second-place-spot in the table is very surprising after the 2011-2014 nuclear-to-coal. If Germany had not phased out nuclear, it would have instead phased out coal (with no costs for EU funds) like the UK did in recent years. I would suggest better ways to use EU funds.
