wrt writes onto datasette (not tried yet:-(, does datasette lite need "open local fs" plugin to save to local disk (eg rlab-filesystem-access.readthedocs.io/en/latest/inde)? And/or github auth/write plugin to save updated db; but how preserve datasette login secret? how serve authed db from eg Pages?

Datasette Lite doesn't have a persistence story at all for the moment - it's very much read only
I haven't really started figuring out how that could work
In terms of auth, only option right now is to host it and the data it's reading on an authenticated server somewhere

Not at all - it loads data from the URLs you pass to it (to CSV or JSON files or to a SQLite database) but is stateless other than that - eg lite.datasette.io/?json=https%3A

The only caching is browser HTTP caching of the linked files - which I think is generally pretty effective
I really want to get Datasette Lite working offline using service workers some time
