A Canadian uses three times the energy of a Chinese (Aussies and US Americans use twice as much). Rising living standards create higher energy needs. Fueling prosperity isn't easy. How much of our future energy needs can be filled by renewables? Source: buff.ly/2XouSho

Canadian here, 60% of our electricity is hydroelectric, 15% nuclear, 7% other renewables and growing by the day, coal is being phased out. Not bothered by high energy usage since it is mostly renewable. Cheap hydro power leads to aluminum smelting Bitcoin mining etc

Interesting to see that other Arctic states also have high energy footprints - heating uses a lot of energy. It would be more interesting to see per capita GHG emissions.

My guess is there is a direct relationship between energy = GDP = prosperity. Renewables are a temporary & unsatisfactory solution. We need technology to develop an alternative energy source vs renewable. Example - not sure nuclear is renewable but it is non-carbon alternative.

Also the colder it is the more energy you need to burn to survive

It would be more realistic to measure emissions based on consumption. Most of resource extraction is destined for foreign consumption.
