Film music criteria for me in order of importance:
1: Does the movie tell its story better with the score.
2: Does the score feel specific to this movie - not a generic cookie cutter that could fit into any similar genre movie.
3: Do I remember the score.

Last year it took me three attempts to listen to Hans’ album for Dune. As ‘listening music’ I wasn’t connecting. Went to see the movie - whole different experience - it deservedly won.

There’s a complaint that film music has become bland. Humbug. My companions on this list are Volker Bertelmann, Carter Burwell, Nathan Johnson, Colin Stetson, Michael Abels. All hugely different phenomenal scores. What they all have in common is dramatic, thematic music essential… Show more
