it takes olde dogs time to learn new tricks! https://www.fastcompany.com/3045424/what-it-takes-to-change-your-brains-patterns-after-age-25 … Progress takes time and the olde and their ways all eventually go extinct making room for better and brighter! But we gotta give a pint of credit when they try “change” like it’s a nice cream flavor...

Fuck. That. We do not have to give credit for half asked apologies that come only to avoid further trouble and not as a real acknowledgement of our pain. We do not have to tolerate bigotry and hate in the name of old dogs or slow progress. It is their responsibility, not ours
-
This wasn’t someone encountering a non-binary person for the first time. And it was also a professional, with an obligation to stay current in their field. I provided multiple opportunities for them to rethink their position, with links to authorities (they should recognize)...
-
...clearly explaining that their position was no longer tenable. Yet they clung to it—no longer able to claim that it’s “professionally correct” to do so, but out of simple bigotry. Then they reveal that they’re an authority over trans youth and have “discussed” this all before.

This is plain and simple gaslighting. The Canary is just pretending that they did nothing wrong and therefore this apology means nothing. Who is hurt by this? Is you and non-binary folks who have to take this crap from ignorant folks. I stand with you.
thank you for fighting. -
I believe Canary Literary Magazine (https://canarylitmag.org ) who did this are NOT the same as The Canary (https://www.thecanary.co )?
-
Correct! It was http://CanaryLitMag.com
-
Yeah sorry! I meant Canary Lit Mag
. Ran out of characters.

It's also hard to believe they were unaware after several emails back and forth. What they meant is they didn't give a shit until the public found out...they just misspelled it. It's understandable, as it's in line with their general knowledge of grammar.
-
Also, if you're an editor, it's your JOB to know this stuff.
-
Exactly. There's no way this wasn't intentional. You'd have to be a hermit on a hilltop to not know that many people are using they/them, WHY they are doing it, that it IS standard English, and even the fact that some people (as in my writing field) use it by default for all.

"We had no idea that our words could become public and that we'd get in trouble for this" sounds wayyy more accurate tbh. They knew plenty how hurtful it was when it was all still private

It's good that they've reversed that unacceptable policy. But they could have had the decency to personally apologise to you too. After all, you very calmly and thoroughly explained your position, and that final email to you was dismissive and condescending.
-
Also, the switch from “I” to “We” in this pseudo-apology indicates: a) not such a stickler for grammar, after all; and b) someone doesn’t want to own their egregiously idiotic and indefensible response(s) as their own transphobic, binary-hugging ignorance/mistake(s).
-
No the "we" is to cover that they included three editors in their discussion. The same three editors of
@sisyphusmag. The same "magazine" with a 2017 edition that called awareness a contac sport. http://sisyphuslitmag.org/c/american-identity-issue/ … -
My point was switching from “I” to “we” w/i same sentence isn’t grammatical, no matter how much individual or combined ignorance involved in ‘apology’. But yes, sounds like all 3 editors needed to learn language, like humans=fluid. Simone Kern is a
#hero for standing their ground -
Agreed, but reading all of their other "awareness" doesn't give any validity to their supposed lack of awareness. I've had my fill of (their) excuses for this nonsense.
-
I’m sure!. Completely agree.

I agree that their response is a steaming pile of BS but at the same time: you have made change. They may not have changed their bigoted feelings but the policy won't hurt any more trans folk. You've done good
