Also, and this should go without saying, but my YA scifi novel is chock-full of LGBTQ+ characters and also diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, and neurodiversity. So...it’s not, like, off-topic by any means.

I’m getting offers to write up more short pieces. I’m so grateful for the opportunities, and I want to take them up! But I’m also SO close to finishing work on my novel. Last-round editing before I’ll resume querying. My writing time is limited by naps & bedtime. What to do?

I've spent the last year and a half working on my WIP. Today I was approached by an outlet (I'm not gonna name yet) to write up the story of all this mess... in 3 hours! , I was drenched in sweat by the time I finished. Holy moly, that was a CHANGE OF PACE.

Just saw the comments on the CLM Facebook page, and I want to thank everyone who asked them to send me an apology. Still haven’t gotten one. Not holding my breath. I imagine they’re probably very angry with me. But your support has more than made up for one person’s ignorance ❤️

And if any former students of mine are out there reading this, if I ever made you feel less-than, please reach out. I want to know about it, so I can do better, and apologize to you personally.

So if I ever made a student feel that their dialect was less valid than white academic English, I am sorry. If I ever made a student feel that their bilingualism was a liability, rather than an amazing asset, I am sorry. And if I ever crossed out a singular “they,” I am sorry!

After hearing from so many educators over the last few days, about what you’re doing to promote inclusivity through language in your schools, I’m realizing just how many opportunities I missed to teach language in a way that promoted equity and tolerance for all.

I never had an out trans student. But then again, besides posting a rainbow flag on my door, I didn’t do anything to specifically make trans students feel welcome to come out to me. I taught pronouns every year, but never once did I teach a lesson on trans pronoun respect.

I was a white teacher in schools where 99% of my students were black or brown, with about 30% English language learners. By not actively showing value for students’ linguistic differences, I upheld white supremacy.

The last few years, it’s true I focused on culturally responsive language instruction, particularly influenced by ’s work. But during my first years teaching, I did not work to ensure students felt their home languages & dialects were just as valid as academic English.

I need to apologize for something. My last words to that editor were “I always taught my kids that...it sucks to use grammar as a weapon to disenfranchise others.” “Always” always makes us liars, right? I did NOT always teach this, and I need to cop to that. (Thread)

Who posted that Audre Lorde quote yesterday that convinced me to name & shame, and what was it?! I'm writing up an article on this, due at 5, but there've been so many notifications and threads on this, I can't find it. LMK if it was you, or if you saw it and can point me to it!

I do not concede that writing with singular they/them is “tricky.” It’s no more tricky than using he/she! Have you ever written a scene with two male characters? Or two female characters? Did you figure out how to clarify when the pronoun referent was ambiguous? Cool. Same thing.

Just spent the last few hours resubmitting "Tadpoles" to different literary magazines. So for those who aren't in the and don't know how this works, you MIGHT be able to read it...6 months to a year from now...yeaaaa publishing takes a long time.

, As I'm resubmitting "Tadpoles," should I mention that it was previously accepted somewhere and the circumstances of it being pulled? I have few writing credits to my name otherwise. On the other hand maybe it comes off antagonistic?

This is BS. You say, “We had no idea,” but I sure TRIED to explain. You had ideas—you ignored them. You say, “I apologize” to Facebook—but my inbox is empty. No one’s apologized to me! You got in trouble, but I’m real skeptical whether anything has been learned here 🤔.
