1/ Bitcoin development suffers from the "free-rider problem".
A bunch of people got really upset with @naval for pointing this out recently. I think he's articulating a reasonable characterization of a problem we collectively face in accelerating future Bitcoin development.

2/ I find myself disagreeing with a lot of the HODLer reactions. This includes people I typically see eye-to-eye with based on their strong writing/thinking/analysis of Bitcoin (e.g.
@bendavenport@real_vijay@moneyball). No one is saying HODLers don't create value by HODLing.২ replies ২ টি পুনঃটুইট ১২টি পছন্দএই থ্রেডটি দেখান -
3/ The "free-rider problem" is a term from economics describing the situation where "those who benefit from resources, public goods, or services do not pay for them, which results in an underprovision of those goods or services" (Wikipedia)

Appreciate your points, David and don't want to get into a semantic battle but I do think HODLers are paying by way of risking their capital and that by doing so they make the project significant enough that developers care enough to want to work on it.

I also think the caliber of developer who is attracted to work on something because of its global significance is going to be higher than a developer that is simply attracted by a quick and direct payoff.

The developers are both HODLers + writing code. In that sense, someone who merely HODLs is, by definition, doing less. Why is that so hard to see? (HODL + code) > HODL. It’s literally math.

This has been an interesting lesson in that, if our identity feels threatened, then we are literally incapable of acknowledging facts.

I'm not sure if you're referring to me in particular; my identity does not feel threatened by your view. I think there's a healthy debate to be had here and I hope I'll be able to reply in a little more depth to the points you raise here.

You’ve been civil, which I appreciate. In summary, I’m a HODLer too but was lamenting that there’s no decentralized way to incent developers to stay on the big chains rather than creating a new chain for every feature. I used an unfortunate term which triggered folks.

There might be ways to incent devs to stay by making features have its own network effects inside the larger chain by incentivizing it through similar token mechanics (perhaps a curved bond). https://medium.com/@simondlr/burning-bridges-to-greener-grass-incentivizing-tokenized-forking-393c69dfecab …. There will still be friction, but less than a whole new chain.

In other words: being early & supporting a new feature (eg ETH_PLASMA) earns you more of the underlying token (eg ETH). Add a similar market for features inside big chains.
