California is facing a $54.3 billion budget shortfall caused by the COVID-19 recession. A one time wealth tax between March 18th and the end of the year just on two billionaires would be enough to cover the state’s entire budget shortfall. Everyone but the 1% is left behind.
The idea that capitalism requires no government intervention or regulation is not true. The government either intervenes to help corporate America or intervenes to help all of America. How is it that the wealthiest Americans are able to pay less in taxes than everybody else?
Mr. Market relies on government issued laws. Like private property laws, limited liability, patents, copyrights, trade agreements, etc. And Mr. Market, just like all of us, relies on government spending to shop, pay his banks back, pay tax & net save.
