Why does the water not have the same grey in both pictures? Are they normalised somehow?
When the sun goes down land surfaces cool quickly but water stays warm. These pics - 4 hours apart - from the GOES-16 sat show this effect. Left: Daytime, land is warm (bright) while the water looks dark. Right:Night, land has cooled (darker) but the water stays warm.pic.twitter.com/n8hahXVnGO

Images are often processed to bring out the detail, and perhaps to compensate for seasonal changes.

That’s an excellent illustration, Simon! Thermal time constant effects trigger an exam question I’ve often considered; “Estimate the thermal time constant of the [thermal centre of] great pyramid”.

We cut a hole in the bottom of a light aircraft and fitted a purloined Chieftan tank thermal imager in there. We flew it just before dawn to map areas of high water table and standing water to aid positioning of water bores in Africa. It worked very well.
