Whoa, "Students that treat Ph.D. school like a 9-5 endeavor are the ones that take 7+ years to finish..." This should be triggering alarm bells. Supervisors who expect their students to work more than 9-5 (or preferred equivalent) are ones to avoid!
True! My PhD scholarship is 4 years, so my PI is aware that I need to finish before that. For Chinese students can extend to 5-7 years as they get the option to do exchange with another university for 1-2 years We all get exact same degree
I think that's a reference to the attitude and not the hours.

Totally agree! I try to work a ‘normal 9-5k’ as much as possible. If I didn’t take time out to relax & pursue my hobbies I’d burn out pretty quickly
