As you know, similar to the ABI, the AHI imagery we all see is after a remapping/resampling process. 16 detectors (4x4) are used (via weighting) to build each pixels. This doesn't explain what that artifact is, though. I think it's a good idea to see where the moon was, then.

There seems to be structure in the ‘anomaly’ - so it could be the Moon’s limb being lensed by the atmosphere (mirage effect due to themal lamination of air over Antarctica).
