Very rarely in cruise. Most often it’s during the climb or descent phase in the vicinity of an airport. ATC does there best to sequence the arrivals and departures but sometimes it’s a bit tight.

Not often at all - never had one for real but you often get a traffic advisory if the rates of descent/climb are on the higher side from other aircraft while you’re in the cruise

Hello Simon, did you have a look at the opensky report 2019 we wrote about TCAS RA? We analysed a few situations around the world during 15 days of recording with three "hotspots": parallel landing, 10000ft and top of climb.

Never. Just one in the hold at PHL

3 RAs in 21 years. 2 in the mid levels, only 1 in high altitude cruise caused by a German AF Eurofighter climbing vertically up ahead to a cleared level 2000ft below. Quite a few TAs over the years though nearly always due to high ROC or D.

Never had one in the cruise personally but know of a colleague who had one in the cruise, owing to the ongoing potential for confusion within the Ercan/Nicosia/Ankara area. (You may know of it but this area has to be very carefully handled ATC wise.) NB-the crew weren’t at fault.
